I am entering a karaoke contest tonight, the winner gets 2000 dollars, and the top three from tonight will be in the finals next month... we have to perform a warm up song, then the contest begins, and we perform one song. My song to perform was Black Horse and the Cherry Tree.... is that a good song for a contest in your opinion? The judges are looking for vocal ability, stage presence, looks. My warm upsong is a cross between You Learn by Alanis Morrissette, or I'm the only One by Melissa Etheridge.
What do you think, which one should I do? Or is there another song that is better in your opinion? I think all three songs have a good beat and is pretty easy to dance to, or get into... but what do you think? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Being a KJ and Singer involved in contests from time to time I think
BLACK HORSE IN A CHERRY TREE is an excellant song choice.

It is very upbeat and catchy - The only concern would be it is a relatively newer song.  - I see you're 19 and if the crowd and judges are young too you will not have any problems - On the other hand if the crowd is old and musty - you could lose points to an older more familiar song.  just my $02

Here's is my .02 I think you should do what you are most confident with.  Check the crowd and like Jam said you may wanna go with a song choice that is a bit older if the crowd is older.  However, I am sure you will be great no matter which you choose.  You are a terrific singer!!!

I hope that was of some help to you.

Break a leg!!! and let us know how you do.

Oooh........ I would NOT do Bytch by Meredith Brooks. Lots of judges frown on profanity in contests, from what I've seen.

If you have the voice for "Black Horse and a Cherry Tree"...... I'd for sure go with that one. It's a huge crowd pleaser, and it's such a catchy song, people will sit up and take notice as soon as the song starts...

Good luck to ya, $2000 would be NiCe..... :)

Black Horse and the Cherry Tree

It is good enough for the most popular singing competition in the Western World, American Idol, but I'm not sure if it is good enough for a local karaoke contest.

Just kidding....it is certainly a good song and even though it is newer it has an old-time country/blues twang to it and a challanging rythm.

Rock on!!

Quite honestly, I think that song has been done to death! You might end up being one of 20 people singing that song!  Certainly, you should perform whatever you feel is best, but to me it's not a very good "singer's song"--i.e., it doesn't show off any vocal attributes one has enough to act as a "showcase".  My opinion only!  Good luck, Michael

There's always Zombie by Cranberries, or any of the Chicago Musical songs to choose from.  Or maybe a R&B tune by Toni Braxton or some of the newer vocalists.

I'm with Mr. Klein.  That song is could be Dead Horse and the Cherry Tree in my neck of the woods.  WAY overplayed here.  Ditto for Before He Cheats. It's teh new Goodbye Earl!
